I'm thinking about players who are truly unusual, but still play what we recognize as guitar, so Derek Bailey is out. Same with Henry Kaiser.

I'm asking because I can't think of anyone who isn't already known. The usual suspects are Adrian Belew, David Torn, Snake Finger, etc. Same with the young woman from Garland, TX who seems to offend so many. Can't recall her name.

Anyway, who's out there that isn't well known, pushing the boundaries of guitar?

This guy has a variety of physical limitations, and while that has caused him to develop a very unusual guitar playing style, he still sounds very much like a normal blues/rock/etc guitarist.

Eric Gales? Last I heard, he's pretty standard blues rock.

As to the others, their names are known, and have been around for decades. I've not seen anyone listed thus far that hasn't had a write up, or full article in a national music/guitar magazine.

I suppose it is difficult to quantify "not well known". No sarcasm intended.

The first person who came to my mind was Steve Tibbets.

    Then there's Adrian Legg...

    And of course, Andy McKee...

As for Eric Gales... Sure, he's a monster player, but I think Eric himself would give the credit to Albert King.

To me, true genius in innovation doesn't sound intentionally innovative. It just sounds like good music. It's not until others sit down and try and play it that the innovations are recognized. Innovators of their day include Django, Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, and Eddie Van Halen.

A couple of newer artists that I consider innovative are Tobin Abassi of Animals as Leaders, and Aaron Marshall of Intervals. I also really like Aaron's friend and tour-mate, Plini...

The vast majority of innovators are never recognized. But that's okay, they're not doing it for recognition.

I suppose Guthrie Govan is no so "unknown" anymore, but he does push improv boundaries every so often... (especially jazz-country fusion around 1:30 onwards).

The question is, is there anyone who is playing guitar these days, yet doesn't rely on the usual styles and conventions? Someone who is so unusual, that they are instantly recognizable even by your grandmother?

I'm starting to think they don't exist. I've been looking for awhile, but if they are out there, they're HIDDEN.

All of these players are great, but more or less well known, and with only one or two exceptions, very conventional.

Turkish player. Plays fretless electric guitar, does traditional makam, and modern stuff. The modern stuff would have to be called fusion, I guess, but I like it anyway.

Since this is The Bad Dog Cafe, I'll nominate myself. No one on TDPRI has heard me play (unknown, check), and if they did they'd definitely say I'm unusual (idiosyncratic and unusual, check, and check).
